Global retailer Krispy Kreme to open 31 shops in SA over next five years
Global retailer Krispy Kreme has announced that it has signed a development agreement with local company KK Doughnuts SA (Pty) Ltd to open 31 Krispy Kreme shops in South Africa over the next five years. This marks the company’s first venture into Africa.
Krispy Kreme’s Original Glazed® doughnuts, great tasting coffee and other assorted sweet treats can be found in more than 1,000 shops in 24 countries.

The Department of Labour recently published an amendment to Sectoral Determination No 14 for the Hospitality Sector, providing for a minimum wage increase of Consumer Price Index (CPI) plus 1.5% effective 1st July 2013 to the 30th June 2014. Peter Cumberlege, Legislative Consultant for FEDHASA Cape - the official voice and representative of the hospitality industry, says: “An increase to the minimum wage has a far greater impact on smaller businesses - such as boutique hotels, bed and breakfasts and privately-owned restaurants – as the larger hospitality groups and independents usually pay well above the minimum.

West Africa’s rising economic super-state Ghana is serious about doing business at this year’s SAITEX and AB7 event in South Africa. The nation will be hosting its own pavilion at the Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX) and Africa’s Big Seven (AB7) taking place from 30 June to 2 July at Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand, Johannesburg.

With less than five days to go to the SAITEX/AB7 expo, a record number of almost 2 500 companies have been profiled and 1500 business meetings have been scheduled. Show organiser John Thomson of Exhibition Management Services expects this figure to increase significantly: “SAITEX is known for its ability to produce business opportunities,” he says. “And these figures confirm that SAITEX is the business and networking hub for African business”. There’s a fair share of fraudulent meat products on the South African market, according to a new study by meat scientists from Stellenbosch University.
The study found that anything from soya, donkey, goat and water buffalo were to be found in up to 68% of the 139 minced meats, burger patties, deli meats, sausages and dried meats that were tested. In other cases, even undeclared plant matter was detected.

Continued growth in sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa, and the benefits derived from a weak rand resulted in the Distell Group raising revenue year-on-year by 9,3% to R8,7 billion for the six months to December 2012. In a climate of mostly muted markets because of the continued global pressure on disposable consumer income, sales volumes increased by 6,6%. With operating expenses 10,0% higher, the company nudged its operating profit up by 5,3%.
