Ultra Liquor’s 100 Women, 100 Wines Awards

Published: November, 2012

The second annual 100 Women 100 Wines event took place in Cape Town on Saturday, November 10.

100 women were selected to attend the event after entering the “100 Women 100 Wines” competition in October. These women then became judges for the Top 100 Wines in South Africa.

Event organiser, Clare Mack of Spill.co.za, says; “The competition and event is such a unique concept that it is the only event of its kind in the world. It makes sense though, if you consider that eighty percent of wines sold in SA are bought by women and that not many of us are wine connoisseurs, so judging by palate is really the best way to go about it.”

This unique event saw 100 women from around the country taste and rate over 200 of South Africa’s best wines in categories “by occasion” such as Long Lunch, Girls Night Out and Best Braai Wine.

Top wines in each category were:

  • Long Lunch – Boschendal Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2012
  • Celebration – Cafe Culture Choc Mousse
  • Girls Night Out – Groote Post Sauvignon Blanc 2012
  • The Boss is Coming for Supper – De Wetshof Finesse Chardonnay
  • Party Wines – Van Loveren Papillion Vin Doux
  • Ultra Special Wines – Steenberg H.M.S. Sphynx Chardonnay 2012
  • After a Long Day at Work – Ernie Els Sauvignon Blanc 2012
  • Best Braai Wine – Secret Cellar Merlot
  • Sunny Day Wine – Villiera Sauvignon Blanc 2012
  • It’s Cold Outside – Mulderbosch Faithful Hound 2009.
