Wineland’s finest chefs to cook for Jozi socialites

The 3rd annual Stellenbosch at Summer Place extravaganza to be hosted by Sanlam Private Investments (SPI) features a formidable line-up of local chefs who will lend extra taste to this unsurpassed wine, food, music and art extravaganza on Wednesday, 7 November.

Bringing the best of the Winelands to Joburg for one night only, the Stellenbosch Wine Routes together with SPI, have paired the crème de la crème of the Wineland’s culinary scene for a sophisticated celebration of all things epicurean with two new chefs making their very first Stellenbosch at Summer Place appearance.

The two debutantes – who are no strangers to the top echelons of the gastronomic elite in South Africa – include Chef Christiaan Campbell who heads up the two beautifully appointed restaurants on the prestigious Delaire Graff Estate, considered to be one of the country’s leading luxury destinations. He will be joined by his ‘gourmet neighbour’, the avant-garde Richard Carstens, Executive Chef at Tokara Restaurant which is situated opposite Delaire Estate, perched high on the Helshoogte Pass outside Stellenbosch.

Completing the 2012 cooking quintet are Michael Broughton of Terroir, Bertus Basson of Overture and George Jardine of The Restaurant at Jordan Estate – who all made the Top 10 Eat Out 2011 poll and will be sharing the spotlight with 50 of the most celebrated Stellenbosch winemakers and estate owners at this glitzy soiree.

From Kanonkop to Kleinood, Waterford to Waterkloof, guests will savour the true spirit of Stellenbosch in style as more than 100 wines from the country’s premium wine region will be paired and enjoyed with an exquisite fusion of gourmet delights.

Brenaissance, Lanzerac and Idiom Wines are some of the new additions to the star-studded 2012 lineup of multi-crowned stalwarts such as Ken Forrester, Le Riche, Muratie and Spier, who will grace Stellenbosch at Summer Place with their most precious vintages.

Food and wine aficionados can look forward to a sophisticated Stellenbosch at Summer Place menu which tempts with George Jardine’s roasted pig cheek with parsley sauce, apple and wood sorrel which he pairs with the Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé and Méthode Cap Classique wines on show.

Bertus Basson’s smoked tongue and mustard croquette is matched with an impressive array of Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and white blends, whilst master saucier Michael Broughton will serve up a confit duck pastille with cherry sauce and pistachio oil to complement the Merlot, Pinotage, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon cellar gems.

Christiaan Campbell’s slow cooked lamb belly on a steamed potato and goat’s cheese bun enriched with broad been pesto is served with a rare selection of red blends whilst Richard Carstens has come up with an authentic Japanese style cheese cake with green tea and mint to tone with the dessert wines for a truly wonderful food and wine pairing experience.

Various rooms of the luxurious Summer Place in Hyde Park will be transformed into a stylish rendezvous for guests to mingle and indulge all their senses. This exclusive event also features live music performances, and art enthusiasts will be able to appreciate rare pieces from the Sanlam Art Collection – one of South Africa’s finest and most extensive corporate art collections. Those looking to understand the investment value of their wine or art collection will find benefit in networking with experts from SPI at the event.
